Human Rights, Democracy, and Justice

Respect for Human Rights, supremacy of the Rule Of Law and Democracy are inseparable. The recognition and practice of these three fundamental principles are the only means to end tyranny and establish peace and prosperity.

The reason Ethiopia continues to suffer from poor governance is the absence of these three pillars of a just society, not because the people of Ethiopia do not aspire and work towards economic, political and social justice.

For so long and for millions around the world, Canada not only provides refuge from discrimination and oppression but also offers an ideal opportunity for its citizens to be inspired and participate in the political process. As citizens of this great nation and political culture it is our moral and national duty to lend support to the people of Ethiopia in their struggle to establish a just society where Human Rights, the supremacy of the Rule of Law, and Democracy prevail.

What Can I Do?

  1. Believe that I CAN make a big difference. Various lobbies – big and small – Chinese, Vietnamese, Bangladeshi, Indian, Tamil – have had a strong impact on Canadian government policy.
  2. Do simple things like write and call politicians and influential members of the media. If all 20,000 Ethiopians in Canada wrote their Member of Parliament or the Globe and Mail newspaper, it would change Canadian policy towards Ethiopia.
  3. Participate in the political process. Make connections. Contribute money and volunteer time to political campaigns. A small contribution can make a huge difference.
  4. Make people in my community aware of the situation in Ethiopia. Let ordinary Canadians know that Canada is giving over $100 million to Ethiopia and is not doing enough for human rights, democracy, and justice.
  5. Remember that I don’t have to wait till my own mother, father, brother, sister, daughter, son, friend, or relative is put in jail to do something. Prevention is better than cure.
